They’re produced from beans derived from the Theobroma cacao tree, also known as the cocoa tree. Cocoa beans are dried after harvesting, then fermented and cracked to produce small, dark bits — or cacao nibs. Cacao nibs offer the perfect opportunity to add texture, chocolatey flavor, and a unique twist to a huge variety of baked goods. Use nibs instead of nuts in cookie recipes; stir a spoonful into cake batter; sprinkle them on top of brownie batter before popping it in the oven or even add them to your pancake mix!
